Independent writing
The first task in the Writing task is integrated writing. When you’ve managed there is the second task -the independent essay. You are given 30 minutes to write a four or five paragraph essay (about 300-350 words) in response to a single question.

Writing an essay:
1. Identify the task clearly.
Before giving any answers be sure you’ve clearly catched the task you are to fulfill. The question may ask you to agree or disagree, make an argument, give an explanation or state a preference.

2. Take up to 5 minutes to plan your essay.
Sometimes students underestimate planning. They think it will take too much time and will take them away from the limited time they have to write the essay. However, by planning in advance, you focus first on what to write and then how you can convey your ideas.

You will also be able to organize your essay more effectively by setting out the points and examples in advance. Use concept maps, venn diagrams, mind maps or other brainstorming tools to help you conceptualize your essay. All your reasons must be valid. Give obvious examples to enrich your writing.

3. The proper structure of your essay.
In the first lines state your position clearly. The examiner should understand your ideas concerning the given topic. After the introductory paragraph, you need to write two or three supporting paragraphs. They must intensify you position, give reasons and examples, and last, the conclusion. The beginning (introduction) and the end (conclusion) of your essay should be strong so that the first and the last impressions are powerful and convincing.

4. Check your essay
Try to spend about 5 minutes at the end to review your essay and correct any obvious spelling, grammatical or vocabulary errors. Better it is you to find and correct the mistakes than a teacher checking all the essays.

5. Conclusion should be given anyway
If you're running out of time, try to add several words summarizing your work so that your essay gives the impression of being complete.

To be sure in your strength, practice writing essays within the 30-minute time limit at home to feel comfortable while writing the true test.
